About Jens Larsen

Jens Larsen

I started taking pictures at the age of 16 or so and my first opportunity was a 30 day trip to Norway; this was definitely an exciting adventure and a life changing experience. I fell in love with photography and went back some 10 years later and accumulated over 700 slides using my Konica AutoreflexTC. At the time, someone told me slides were the way to go. If only knew now way back in 1980 I would have developed prints, converting slides to print is challenging and expensive as ever today.

I eventually upgraded to a Cannon Rebel 35mm and a Nikon digital, slowly upgrading through the years. Coming from an era of 35mm film, I still find it hard to let go of film, so needless to say I keep Kodak and Fuji film in business while C-41 processing is still around.

In 1992 I took some courses at the Rochester Institute of Technology in order to fine tune my skills which is ever evolving to this day. As you may already know Rochester, NY is the home of (Eastman) KODAK. While there, I enjoyed the "Lilac Festival" and anyone who has gone or lives in the area knows what I’m talking about! I would suggest that if you visit the area you take a tour of the George Eastman House as well.

Any opportunity I can take a photography course whether it’s about camera technique or a photo editing class, I try to not miss. In today’s age of digital you need to keep on top of your game.

As far as my style or preference, I don't think I have one, I like all mediums and techniques and I try to dabble in a little bit of everything. Some say you should stick to one thing where you become good then great, while I like that, for me it just hasn't worked, I want to be great in everything :) I sometimes find myself getting bored while out capturing images and wanting to move on to something else, whether its macro shots, telephoto shots, black and white, you name it. I just can't go out one day and just capture birds, or close up macros shots, I'm afraid I might miss something along the way. I also like taking an image that is questionable as a self critic and turning to...."let me try this" and making it something unique and wonderful. Making something out of nothing I call it. Because you never know...who, what and where your work will be looked at and liked.

So hence, while I'm out I never travel light, I've tried it, trust me it doesn't work and yes I've had the conversation with other photographers that just shake their heads at me, to that I say "I can't, I might miss something". They walk away with one their camera and one lens case, me on the other hand; 2 cameras, camera bag with all 5 lens and a tripod. It's endurance I tell myself! So far its worked! :)
